The 2021-22 Champions League last 16 is now past. Chelsea and Villarreal were the final teams to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Benfica, and Atletico Madrid had already qualified to the next round.
Bayern Munich (Germany)
Bayern Munich won 8-2 on aggregate against Salzburg. The Austrians stunned Germany with a 1-1 draw in the first leg, leaving them to dream, but the Bavarian roller was on fire in the second leg. After 23 minutes, Lewandowski‘s hat trick made it all but certain.
Liverpool (England)
Liverpool beat Inter on aggregate by a score of 2-1. The Reds struggled in the half of first leg, but came away with a crucial 2-0 second-half victory to advance to the quarter-finals. At Anfield, Lautaro Martinez provided the excitement, but Klopp’s side came out on top in the end.
Real Madrid (Spain)
PSG was eliminated by Real Madrid 3-2 on aggregate. Los Blancos, who were outclassed in the first leg, have only been defeated 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Mbappe. With a 1-0 up at the Santiago Bernabeu in the return leg, when the Frenchman appeared to have won all, Benzema’s hat trick in the second half made it possible for ‘Los Blancos’ comeback.
Manchester City (England)
Sporting Portugal was knocked out 5-0 on aggregate by Manchester City. The one-sided victory over the Lisbon giants gave Pep Guardiola’s team the overall lead in the play-offs. With everything decided, neither team caused any damage in the second leg, and the 0-0 draw sealed the Citizens’ place in the quarter-finals.
Benfica (Portugal)
On aggregate, Benfica beat Ajax 3-2. The Portuguese, who began as underdogs, won the second leg on their single attempt at goal. Ajax appeared to have the moral advantage after the 2-2 tie in the first leg, but despite dominating possession, they were unable to score.
Atletico Madrid (Spain)
Manchester United was beaten 2-1 on aggregate by Atletico Madrid. Simeone’s team deserved more than a 1-1 draw in the first leg, and they continued their classic Cholismo style to beat a flat and out-of-sorts United at Old Trafford. Renan Lodi’s goal secured their place in the quarter-finals.
Chelsea (England)
Chelsea won 4-1 on aggregate against Lille. With Abramovich’s club’s financial and structural issues going on, the defending Champions continues winning. Chelsea pulled a 2-0 first-leg win at Stamford Bridge. Going in strong with a 2-0 win, Lille had an early onslaught, with a 1-0 lead, but Pulisic and Azpilicueta turned the scoreboard around in France after a setback.
Villarreal (Spain)
On aggregate, Villarreal beat Juventus 4-1. Perhaps the most unexpected aspect of Benfica’s progress. After a 1-1 tie in the first leg at La Cerámica, the return match was wide open. The Yellows were outplayed and outclassed in the second half, but three goals (two on penalties) carried them through.
With the quarter final set, who will win the champions league this season.
