Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has cautioned goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale against making hasty decisions about his future with the club ahead of the January transfer window. Arteta hinted at potential changes in Ramsdale’s role within the team in the coming months. This comes after England manager Gareth Southgate informed Ramsdale that he cannot guarantee him a place in the Euro 2024 squad if he continues to remain on the bench at Arsenal.
Despite Ramsdale’s recent call-up for England’s qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia, he has seen limited playing time since the arrival of David Raya, who has started every Arsenal league and Champions League match since September 17.
Speaking on the matter, Arteta emphasized the importance of a complete squad fulfilling various roles in the team. He stated, “The role that you have in August might be very different from the one you have in March.” Arteta warned against making early decisions, citing the evolving needs of the team.
Arteta confirmed that Ramsdale is likely to be among the substitutes in Arsenal’s upcoming match against Burnley. The team faces potential challenges with up to eight players uncertain for the game. Emile Smith Rowe, Thomas Partey, and Jurrien Timber are confirmed absentees, while Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Eddie Nketiah, Gabriel Jesus, and Takehiro Tomiyasu face uncertainties.
Arteta provided an update on Saka, stating, “He didn’t train yesterday [Thursday]. Let’s see if he can make it tomorrow [Saturday].” Captain Martin Odegaard is still racing to be fit, and there are injury concerns for Saka and Tomiyasu following the Champions League win over Sevilla. Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah, Thomas Partey, Emile Smith Rowe, and Jurrien Timber are definite absentees.
