Barcelona is tackling their financial woes with a unique strategy – selling diamonds made from the historic Nou Camp turf. The LaLiga champions have moved to the Olympic Stadium for a 24-month tenancy while their £1.3 billion stadium renovation is underway.
The club, facing financial challenges and navigating league regulations for player acquisitions, introduced a range of commemorative merchandise on their website. This includes items like portions of the last goal nets, a framed piece of the pitch, a gold Camp Nou pin, and a gold Camp Nou necklace.
However, the spotlight shines on diamonds created from the carbon of the old Camp Nou grass. These diamonds come in two sizes, with the half-carat version priced at £2,200 and the single-carat variant at around £13,000. The process is touted as sustainable with zero environmental impact, and they come with certificates from the International Gemological Institute.
Fans were also offered a chance to buy objects from the stadium before its renovation, including seats and signs. Barcelona’s stadium overhaul includes adding a roof and renaming it the Spotify Nou Camp, with an increased capacity of 105,000.
The club plans to enhance facilities for supporters, including VIP areas and larger seating. Originally aimed for a 2024 reopening, the stadium is now expected to welcome fans in the 2025-26 season. This project is poised to generate an extra £25 million in annual revenue for the club upon completion.
