Michael Emenalo, the current Director of Football for the Saudi Pro League, emphatically stated that footballers are not coming to the Middle East only for financial incentives but to establish their professional legacies.
The Saudi Arabian top-tier football league has been attracting numerous top stars, making it a significant destination for players.
Cristiano Ronaldo, for instance, left Manchester United after his second stint in the Premier League and moved to Saudi Arabia, where he made a positive impact on his new club, Al-Nassr.
Other prominent players like Karim Benzema from Real Madrid to Al-Ittihad, N’Golo Kante from Chelsea, and Ruben Neves from Wolverhampton to Al-Hilal have also joined the league.
While some football fans may assume that these players are motivated purely by the financial rewards in a perceived lower-tier competition, Emenalo refuted this notion. He argued that the Saudi Pro League is not just about money.
Reports from reputable sources like The Athletic and the BBC indicate that Emenalo believes players are well aware of the industry’s nature and not ignorant of other aspects driving their decisions.
“They recognize when something is happening, and you have to have conversations with them, not just the agent, and explain to them what the league is about,” he added.
“So if a lot of them are making this decision, it’s not necessarily because of the economic side of the opportunity. It’s also because they recognize that this is going to be something that defines their legacy, and they have an opportunity to contribute something special.”

Personally, I enjoyed the photojournalism aspect of it, as it just as easily could have been another paint-by-numbers war film. It also shows a potential future where each side reaches their breaking point and conflict does ensue.
