Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli accepted a seven-month ban after admitting to illegal betting. He also cooperated with authorities, resulting in a shorter ban than the usual three-year penalty.
The Prosecutor’s office, according to Sky Sport, confirmed the reduced ban as a reward for Fagioli’s cooperation. While the initial suspension was set at 12 months, five months are suspended, hence the midfielder is expected to be out for 7 months. Fagioli must also undergo six months of treatment for his gambling addiction and pay a Ā£10,850 fine. This ends his season with Juventus but is less severe than a three-year suspension that could have ended his career.
Fagioli is one of more than 40 players suspected of illegal betting, including Premier League players Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo. Tonali, who signed with Newcastle United, admitted to a gambling addiction and is willing to cooperate with authorities.
Zaniolo, on loan to Aston Villa, denies betting on matches but says he might have played poker and blackjack on illegal online platforms unknowingly.
