Mainz 05 has decided to suspend Anwar El Ghazi, a recent acquisition as a free agent, following his pro-Palestinian Instagram story and participation in a political discussion. The decision was revealed in a statement released by the club, citing concerns over the content of El Ghazi’s social media post and his stance on a sensitive political matter.

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Bundesliga club took this action after the 28-year-old Dutch-Moroccan winger posted a pro-Palestinian story on Instagram, generating controversy due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The club officially announced, “El Ghazi has been released from training and games,” emphasizing that the decision was a response to a social media post made by the player that has since been deleted. Mainz 05 made it clear that the content of the post did not align with the values of the club, which prompted the suspension.

The statement continued to explain, “The release was preceded by a detailed discussion between the board and the player. However, the club clearly distances itself from the content of the post as it does not reflect the values of our club.”

El Ghazi, who was initially included in the squad for Saturday’s match against Bayern Munich, is now no longer part of the team for the upcoming fixture.
