Manchester City’s defensive lineup faces a setback as John Stones and Manuel Akanji are set for an extended period on the sidelines. This news follows their 3-0 victory over Young Boys in the Champions League.
Stones, who had just returned to action in October after a hip injury during pre-season, was substituted at half-time in Tuesday’s game due to an injury. City manager Pep Guardiola confirmed that Stones is expected to be out for a considerable duration, stating, “Yeah, I think he will be out a while. I feel so sorry for him.” This marks the third injury setback for Stones this year, adding to his hamstring and hip troubles.
Also, Manuel Akanji suffered a back problem during the pre-match warm-up and was replaced by Kyle Walker just before the match began.
Despite these setbacks, Manchester City secured a routine victory over Young Boys, with goals from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, ensuring their qualification for the Champions League last 16. However, these injuries come at an unfortunate time as City is gearing up for crucial matches against Liverpool and Tottenham following the November international break.
Guardiola acknowledged the significance of losing Stones, who had adapted to new midfield responsibilities after starting as a central defender. Ally McCoist emphasized Stones’ importance to the team and the concern over injuries in the upcoming tests for City.
While Guardiola expressed regret over the injuries, he remains optimistic about Stones’ recovery, saying, “He will recover; the season is long, and he will be back stronger.”
