Liverpool and PSV Eindhoven have struck a €50 million (£44 million) agreement for striker Cody Gakpo.

On Monday night, the clubs held talks as Liverpool sought to avoid interference from Manchester United.

United had initiated talks but had yet to finalize an offer, and Liverpool took advantage, with PSV declaring that the two clubs had reached an agreement.

Gakpo rejected offers from Leeds and Southampton last summer in order to stay at PSV after the Dutch club turned them down.

The 23-year-old had chosen to wait for proposals from Champions League clubs, and despite the draw of Manchester United’s Erik Ten Hag, the Reds met the description.

Liverpool are concerned about Luis Diaz’s injury following knee surgery, as Darwin Nunez is still finding his feet after joining from Benfica.

Leeds proposed £25 million plus add-ons for Gakpo in the summer, but PSV rejected the bid because the add-ons were deemed impractical. They have been negotiating a fee of roughly £45 million for the Holland international.

United were considered favourites, but continuous speculation over their sale has raised doubt on how much money is available this month.
