Newcastle United is considering a January move for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips. The former Leeds midfielder, who joined City in 2022, has struggled to get playing time, with just two Premier League starts.
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side aims to strengthen their defensive midfield options. Phillips, 27, is their preferred choice. Although Newcastle brought in Sandro Tonali in the summer, he’s been used in a more attacking role. Bruno Guimaraes, often playing as the deepest midfielder, would prefer a more advanced position.
Phillips built a strong reputation during his eight years with Leeds, known as one of England’s top holding midfielders. This led to a significant bid from Manchester City. He joined City for £42 million on a six-year contract.. However, he has faced challenges fitting into Guardiola’s system.
If Phillips decides to leave Manchester City in January, Newcastle is ready to make a move. While not planning numerous signings, Eddie Howe’s team sees defensive midfield as a priority, and Phillips is their ideal choice.
Newcastle’s recruitment team is set to act, either through a permanent transfer or an initial loan deal with the potential for a permanent switch next summer.
