Ilkay Gundogan who was unveiled by Spanish club Barcelona has taken to the media to speak on his choice of signing for the La Liga champions.
The former Manchester City player ended his seven-year spell in Manchester after leading the club to a historic treble. Fulfilling one of his lifelong ambitions, the 32-year-old has spoken about the events that unfolded before he signed the contract with Barcelona.
According to Barcelona Universal, the midfielder highlighted the influence of Robert Lewandowski in his decision to join the La Liga champions.
Gundogan said:
“After Poland vs. Germany, Robert asked me to have a short talk.
And when he started talking about Barcelona, the club, the city, the family lifestyle,
I could see a twinkle in his eye and his joy and how much he loves being part of this club.”
Amidst the dazzling spectacle and enthusiasm, Gundogan found a moment to express his admiration for a few Barcelona legends who have had a profound impact on him.
The esteemed midfielder singled out Ronaldinho, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, and Sergio Busquets as his revered idols in the world of football.
As quoted by Barca Times he said:
“My idols? Ronaldinho…although he is very different from me.
“Also Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets,” he said.
Barcelona fans are hopeful about the arrival of Ilkay Gundogan at the club, as the initial days of the German player at the Spanish club have shown promise. Fans are optimistic that Gundogan can reproduce his outstanding performances from his time at Manchester City.

In addition, the former Manchester City captain has secured an insurance policy worth £7.7 million, as a precaution in case Barcelona’s financial difficulties prevent him from playing this season.
To mitigate any potential risks, Gundogan’s contract includes a special clause that allows him to leave Barcelona if the club is unable to register him due to financial problems.
